How to Help Yourself
How to Help Yourself
Self development has a lot to do with your own ability to maintain personal growth. Like a plant, our growth is determined by our environment and how this matches our needs to grow. Many people when venturing into self-development methods are missing important factors to help them really learn and change from their “self-help experience”. I believe that one of these factors is that people often misinterpret the method of self-development, as literally being development that they do on their own. This is not entirely true, and when talking about the playing field of learning; I would like to illustrate a different perspective. A perspective which will allow you to help yourself in any area of your life! When thinking about how to help yourself, you should be thinking about how to find learning from others but develop your own method of education.
Many books talk about simply changing your own role, your personality, your idea’s and your view on the world. So people fall into the trap of being brainwashed rather than educated. They rely on the idea that by becoming vulnerable to other peoples circumstances, they are improving their own. They let themselves take the step, ‘pat themselves on the back’ and say how wonderful it is that they are developing themselves, but end up down the “rabbit hole” without knowing what to do next and having learned little!
“If you’re proactive, you don’t have to wait for circumstances or other people to create perspective expanding experiences. You can consciously create your own.” - Stephen Covey
It is so important that when venturing into journeys of self-development that you are consciously creating your own educating experiences. By doing so, you can create a balanced environment for your own learning and your effective self-help methods turn into valuable education.
“One of the greatest problems of our time is that many are schooled but few are educated.” - Thomas Moore
I experience many scenarios where my self-development methods fall short because I do not recognize that the learning is gained from others, but the education is only valuable if my method is tailored by myself. When I see this happen I often blame the self-development process! When I start to believe that the process isn’t working I then see myself considering education centers and courses for a different learning approach. But who is to say that these costly methods will be worthwhile!?
The way to help yourself properly is to apply your own knowledge of yourself, which is gained through self-understanding and experience, to consciously create a learning experience which enhances your own life in the form of valuable education. You do not need a schoolbook or a course paper to do this for you. Once you have established your learning method, you can seek from others the information and knowledge of which to learn from. Do not mistake this as gaining the knowledge yourself, the people providing you with the information are literally gifting you valuable and enhancing fuel for your own education.
Do not eliminate the help and knowledge of others just because the words ‘Self Help’ does not include them. You can improve your own capability for learning by simply concentrating on the right aspect of your self-development method. I am saying that you should concentrate on how you are learning what you are given to learn by the world around you.
